ZANON AND MICHELOTTO VICTORIOUS IN BARCELONA WINTER SERIES FINAL
GT Winter Series, Barcelona - Spain

Barclona victory for Zanon and Michelotto

After claiming one victory each in the opening round at Estoril in January, Ignazio Zanon and Mattia Michelotto returned to the GT Winter Series for the final weekend at Barcelona.

After four days of sunny, dry practice sessions the teams and drivers were met by rain on Saturday morning. In the first qualifying session, red-flagged three times, Zanon was second fastest. The rain had stopped for the first race but the circuit was still wet and slippery. Zanon held on to second at the start before a lengthy safety car intervention to retrieve Scholz from the gravel halted racing. At the restart Zanon held off Heyer’s Mercedes and from there on ran untroubled to the flag to finish second.

Michelotto took a place on the second row for race two, run in the dry on Sunday morning. Chaos at the start saw several cars go wide at turn 1, rejoining and gaining an advantage. Michelotto ran in fourth before the race was red flagged for a big crash on the straight. At the restart there were twenty minutes left and Michelotto spent them all harassing the Audi of Levi which he finally overtook on the final lap to claim the last podium place.

Combined qualifying times set the grid for the final fifty-five minute race of the Barcelona weekend and Zanon started from the pole. A perfect start saw him rocket into the lead of the race before a lengthy Safety Car to retrieve Massa’s Porsche from the gravel halted racing. At the restart Zanon kept Verselaho’s Ferrari behind him and pulled out a three second gap before pitting for Michelotto. Despite a second Safety Car period the VSR Lamborghini was never headed and Michelotto took the chequered flag with over six seconds to the rest of the field.
