VSR dominate on Asian comeback
** Kingsford and Van Der Drift win Race 1 **
** Sceats and Wisniewski win Race 2 **
The VSR drivers showed impressive form in the opening round of the Lamborghini Super Trofeo Asia Championship at Sepang this weekend. Todd Kingsford and Chris Van Der Drift in the Feynlab and Mipox backed entry took overall and Pro-Am honours on Saturday and finished second on Sunday, once again winning their class. On Sunday they were narrowly beaten to the chequered flag by team-mates Liam Sceats and Gustaw Wisniewski who took the overall and Pro victory.
Out in Saturday’s qualifying session to set the grid for race 1 were Sceats and Kingsford. Despite losing his best lap to a track limits infringement Sceats took a place on row two with Kingsford, the fastest Am, just one place behind him. A clean start saw the VSR cars hold position and after a few laps they were pushing hard to pass Sherlock for third. Just before the pit window opened they both overtook to move into third and fourth respectively. On lap ten Kingsford pitted for Van Der Drift and two laps later Wisniewski took over the 6 car from Sceats. When the pit window closed on lap fourteen Van Der Drift was up to second, just two seconds behind the leader, and Wisniewski was running fourth. With fourteen minutes left on the clock Van Der Drift passed Treguetha for the lead and began to pull away. His lead was cut back when the Safety Car came out for a car in the wall and the race went green with just two minutes to go. Van Der Drift held on easily for the overall and Pro-Am win and Wisniewski took third overall and second in Pro.
For Sunday’s race Van Der Drift took the Pro-Am pole and started from the front row with Wisniewski just behind him in third. There were no changes at the start but it only took Van Der Drift just half a racing lap to repeat Saturday’s move on Treguetha, passing the Brit to take the lead. On lap five the Safety Car came out, stopping Wisniewski who was lining up for a pass on Treguetha for second. The track went green just before the pit window opened and on lap nine Wisniewski pitted the 6 car for Sceats. A lap later the 7 pitted and returned to the track with Sherlock aboard just in front of Sceats. The VSR driver was quick to get ahead as Van Der Drift stayed out putting seconds on the whole pack. On lap twelve Van Der Drift handed over to Kingsford who rejoined the track heading up a VSR 1-2. As the race entered the final ten minutes Sceats had reduced Kingsford’s lead to just over two seconds. With three minutes left the two cars were separated by tenths, scrapping over the race win. On the final lap Sceats made it past Kingsford who fought back but couldn’t make the pass stick. The two took the chequered flag separated by just four tenths to celebrate VSR’s Asian comeback with a dominant performance.
