2026 Lamborghini Super Trofeo Asia, Round 3 – Fuji Speedway (Japan)
Class wins and podiums for the VSR crews at rain hit Fuji
The 2026 Lamborghini Super Trofeo Asia Championship reached the halfway point with a double-header event at the iconic Fuji Speedway in Japan. Todd Kingsford and Chris Van Der Drift continued their domination of the Pro-Am class taking victories in both races. Liam Sceats and Gustaw Wisniewski, getting their first taste of racing in the rain claimed two overall podium finishes.
After topping the times in both Pro and Pro-Am in free practice one Sceats and Van Der Drift took to the track for the first qualifying session on Saturday. Van Der Drift took the overall pole by just six hundredths of a second from Cecotto, sealing the Pro-Am pole in the process. Sceats was the second fastest Pro car and lined up on row two for the first race.
The heavens opened before the start of Saturday’s race which was started behind the safety car. For both drivers in the VSR Pro car it was their first experience driving in the wet. When racing got underway Van Der Drift was quick to streak away into the lead but Cecotto was a constant presence behind him. Just before the pit window opened Cecotto found a way past Van Der Drift to take the overall lead. When the pit window opened Sceats pitted the 6 for Wisniewski who found himself third in Pro when the window closed. Van Der Drift was the last car to stop, handing the Pro-Am lead to Kingsford who looked immediately comfortable despite the difficult conditions. He held easily on to the Pro-Am lead and took the chequered flag second overall, just ahead of the battle for second in Pro between Li and Wisniewski. The VSR driver caught Li with ten minutes to go and managed to get alongside him a couple of times before making the pass stick on the penultimate lap. After the race the stewards decided to penalise Wisniewski for the pass and the five second penalty left the six car third in Pro in the final classification.
Wisniewski set the third fastest time in qualifying for Sunday’s race and Todd was second quickest in Pro-Am, just two tenths behind last year’s European Champion Putera in the 33 car. Overnight rain left the Speedway shrouded in mist and fog and the race started with tentative laps behind the Safety car before being red flagged. An hour later the race resumed, once again behind the Safety Car, and the track went green with thirty-five minutes left on the clock. On the slippery track Wisniewski attempted to pass Tregurtha whilst Kingsford held second in Pro-Am. Wisniewski was still trying to make the pass stick when the pit window opened. Kingsford pitted for Van Der Drift and a lap later Tregurtha pitted leaving the track free for Wisniewski who waited until the end of the window to box for Sceats. The young Kiwi exited in second place but was immediately pounced on by Sherlock who, already up to speed, demoted him to third. Van Der Drift was comfortably leading the Pro-Am class and was just seven seconds behind the top three Pro runners with ten minutes to go. On the final lap Sherlock, Sceats and Van Der Drift were tied together as they battled for second overall but at the chequered flag there was no change to the positions.
