Sceats and Wisniewski triumph in Korea as Kingsford and Van Der Drift blitz Pro-Am
Liam Sceats and Gustaw Wisniewski returned to the top step of the podium at Inje, taking a classy win in race two. Their victory followed a fine second place in race one. In the Mipox and Feynlab sponsored Pro-Am entry Todd Kingsford and Chris Van Der Drift continued their class domination with two more wins and two more overall podiums.
Out in the first of Friday’s qualifying sessions were Wisniewski and Kingsford. Their best times separated by just one tenth the two VSR drivers lined up on the second row and Kingsford took the Pro-Am pole. After a delayed start for track repairs and two formation laps the race finally got underway and the two VSR cars held position. After two racing laps Kingsford found himself under pressure from Pro driver Wolfe. The VSR driver defended brilliantly until the pit window opened when he boxed to give the class leading 98 to Van Der Drift. Wisniewski stayed out for another couple of laps before pitting the Pro car for Sceats who stayed in third overall. With fifteen minutes left on the clock Sceats had caught Li and was challenging for second place as behind Van Der Drift was closing in. On lap twenty-two, with both VSR cars filling his mirrors, Li ceded second to Sceats who was followed through by Van Der Drift. For two more laps the two VSR drivers ran nose-to-tail scrapping over second before Van Der Drift got the better of his fellow Kiwi. With leader Cecotto too far down the road to be caught, Van Der Drift finished second overall and took the Pro-Am win with Sceats finishing second in Pro.
Van Der Drift started race two from the front row after once again taking the Pro-Am pole. Sceats started one place behind him and after two laps behind the Safety Car racing got underway on a slightly damp track. When the pit window opened on lap eleven Van Der Drift was still on Cecotto’s tail, attempting to force the leader into an error and Sceats sat comfortably a second back from their battle. Cecotto was the first of the leading trio to pit and a lap later Van Der Drift stopped for Kingsford. Sceats was the last to stop, Wisniewski taking the 6 car over for the run to the flag. With the pit window closed Kingsford held a slender half second lead over Tregurtha who in turn had a small advantage over Wisniewski. The battle between the three enlivened the second half of the race as Kingsford kept the Pro drivers behind him for lap after lap. With eight minutes left Sherlock joined the battle and as Kingsford and Tregurtha raced side by side Wisniewski slipped through and passed them both. Sherlock wrested third from Kingsford before stopping on track leaving Wisniewski, Tregurtha and Kingsford to continue their fight for the overall win. With five minutes to go the Safety Car came on track to recover Sherlock and racing did not resume. Wisniewski took the overall and Pro win and Kingsford Pro-Am victory number eight of the season.
