Cristovao and Levet take class honours in Germany
Round four of the European Lamborghini Super Trofeo Championship was held at the iconic Nurburgring Grand Prix circuit this weekend. VSR fielded unchanged line-ups with Fin Green and Euan Hankey taking charge of the number 6 Pro entry and Miguel Cristovao and Paul Levet continuing together in Pro-Am. Highlights of the weekend included an accomplished pole for Levet in Saturday’s race followed by fourth overall and Pro-Am victory for himself and co-driver Cristovao.
After mixed weather for Friday’s free practice sessions the drivers took to a fully dry track for Saturday morning qualifying. Levet took his second overall pole of the season to line up on the first row, whilst Green was fifteenth fastest, hampered by traffic. The race got underway with threatening rain clouds overhead. Levet shot off into the lead as Green recuperated places, closing the opening lap in fourteenth place. As light rain started to fall Levet, setting fastest lap after fastest lap, pulled away as Green enjoyed a frantic multi-car battle for the final points place. The pit window opened on lap ten and Green boxed immediately to handover to Hankey who stayed on slicks despite the tricky, damp conditions. Levet stayed on track in the 66 until the end of the window, handing the overall and Pro-Am lead to Cristovao on lap fourteen. With fifteen minutes to go Cristovao held a slender one and a half second lead over Ruffini and the Pro-Am pair were being chased down by a gaggle of Pro cars. Hankey, one of the fastest men on track, ran in thirteenth. On lap seventeen Iaquinta in the first of the Pro cars, took over at the head of the field from Cristovao, who continued to defend his Pro-Am lead from Ruffini and a fast-approaching Pretorious. The VSR driver was never fazed and hung on to take an impressive fourth place overall and the first Pro-Am win of the season for himself and co-driver Levet. Hankey took the chequered flag in tenth place.
Qualifying for Sunday’s race was interrupted by a lengthy Full Course Yellow and Hankey took a place on row four with Cristovao, fourth in Pro-Am, on the eighth row. At the start Hankey was hit from behind as the field braked for the first corner. The Englishman kept it on the road but fell back to fourteenth, just behind Cristovao. On lap two the VSR cars swapped places and on lap five Hankey passed Wolfe for twelfth. The pit window opened on lap eleven and Cristovao dived into the pits straightaway to give the 66 to Levet. Hankey stayed on track until the end of the window and Green took over, running in tenth. Levet, fastest driver on track during the driver change window, held twelfth and fourth in Pro-Am. On lap sixteen the two VSR cars again swapped places as Levet hunted down Knopp and a Pro-Am podium. With twelve minutes to go the Safety Car came out to retrieve Matic stuck in the gravel. Racing resumed with six minutes on the clock. Levet was quick to get past Knopp at the restart and then a lap later passed the remaining two Pro-Am cars to take the class lead. However a huge crash on the straight bought out the red flag and the classification was put back to lap twenty, denying Cristovao and Levet a second class win.
