PRESS RELEASE: 5th June 2020

AGHAKHANI COMMITS TO ITALIAN GT ENDURANCE WITH VSR

VSR is thrilled to confirm that 17-year-old American racing star Steven Aghakhani will drive one of the team’s Lamborghini Huracan GT3 Evo racing cars in this season’s Italian GT Endurance Championship. Steven will share the number 19 Huracan with experienced Lamborghini racer Raffaele Giammaria from Italy and one other driver who will be confirmed shortly.

Aghakhani began racing only last year, cutting his teeth in the American Lamborghini Super Trofeo Championship before making a name for himself at the World Finals in Jerez by winning the Am class.

The rescheduled Italian GT Endurance Championship will get underway six weeks from now with Mugello due to hold the season opener on the weekend of 19th July.

Steven Aghakhani: I’m very excited to have this opportunity and can’t wait to start testing with the team. I’ve been working hard with my coaches and trainer in the US during the long break from racing but I know I need seat-time as the Italian circuits are tough and challenging and the Championship is very competitive. I’m proud to represent my sponsors, including SADA Systems Inc, abroad and honoured by the chance Lamborghini have given me.

Giorgio Sanna (Head of Lamborghini Squadra Corse): We are very proud to have Steven with us in Italian GT3. Our target is to have him as an ambassador for our Young Driver Programme and, paired with Raffaele, we have an exciting mix. We will take good care of Steven in his first experience racing GT3 in Europe and he is in the best of hands with Vincenzo and his team.

Vincenzo Sospiri: I’m delighted we have been able to include Steven in our Italian GT programme this year. I saw him race last year in Jerez and tested him before the winter break. He has a lot of potential and pairing him with Raffaele will ensure he continues his already impressive learning curve.
