VSR victorious in Germany
European Lamborghini Super Trofeo – Nurburgring
Nurburgring hosted the third round of the European Lamborghini Super Trofeo Championship this weekend. The three full season VSR Huracans had unchanged drivers with Michelotto and Stadsbader in the Pro car number 6, Lewandowski and Spinelli driving the Pro-Am entry number 16 and Anapoli and Randazzo lining up in the number 60 in the Am class.
Despite mixed weather all weekend both practice sessions were run in the dry and competitive times were posted by all the VSR drivers. The grid for the first race of the weekend was set on Saturday morning and VSR’s Q1 drivers were Michelotto, Lewandowski and Anapoli. Michelotto took his second pole of the season and Lewandowski started from row eleven as the tenth fastest Pro-Am car. A perfect start from Michelotto saw him lead easily into turn 1 and for the rest of his stint he maintained a gap of around one second to Schandorff behind him. Lewandowski became embroiled in a battle with Colombini, the two trading places several times before Lewandowski won the fight. On lap ten the pit window opened and Lewandowski pitted immediately for Spinelli to take over. Michelotto didn’t pit until the very end of the window when he handed the race lead over to Stadsbader. The Belgian youngster had a flawless run to the flag to claim the third win of the season for the number 6 Pro car. Spinelli fought back to thirteenth place, fourth in Pro-Am and finished just half a second off the Pro-Am podium. Technical issues for the 60 car stopped Anapoli setting a representative time in qualifying and forced him to retire from the race.
Spinelli lined up on the front row for Sunday morning’s race with Stadsbader on row eight and Randazzo on row eighteen. Early morning rain left the track wet but drying and the cars switched to slick tyres on the grid. The race was started behind the Safety Car and went green after six minutes only for the Safety Car to be called out again after just one racing lap. Racing restarted again on lap eight and Spinelli, who had originally lost out to Arrow and pole-sitter Bonduel, was quick to pass them both and take off into the lead of the race. A lap later the pit window opened and a trip through the gravel for Stadsbader delayed the 6 car as he pitted for Michelotto. Next in was Randazzo who had made up a handful of places in Am and when Anapoli took over the number 60 car was placed third in class. Spinelli stayed on track until just before the pit window closed, and when he pitted he handed the race leading car to Lewandowski. The Polish driver had a five second gap to the Pro drivers behind him who didn’t catch him until four laps before the chequered flag. Lewandowski made life difficult for Leitch and Bonduel before conceding but held off the rest off the Pro field until the end to take third overall and the Pro-Am victory. Michelotto limped home in twelfth overall and Anapoli bought the 60 car home third in class – a welcome return to the podium for the Am pairing after the disappointment of Saturday.
The Super Trofeo drivers will now take a break until September when Valencia will host the fourth round of the European Championship.
